The East Central Community College Lady Warriors squeaked out a one-point win, 66-65, over the visiting East Mississippi Community College Lady Lions Thursday, Nov. 10, in Brackeen-Wood Gymnasium on the Decatur campus.

The Lady Warriors held a 15-point advantage going into the fourth quarter, 55-40, but EMCC was able to close to within one point in the closing seconds of the contest.

Sophomore Shadejha Brown of Lake High School hit a pair of last second free throws to secure the win for East Central.

The East Central Community College Warrior Walking Club will hold a kickoff event Thursday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Dick Livingston Recreational/Study Trail near the EC Lake on the Decatur campus.

The Warrior Walking Club was implemented in October thanks to a grant from the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation to support the college’s Warrior Wellness initiative that is helping to create and sustain a culture of wellness on the East Central campuses and in the local communities.

If the East Central Community College men’s basketball team is to return to the state playoffs after a year’s absence, it’s going to be because of quality depth and team unity.

Along with a lot of new faces.

Head Coach Robert Thompson enters his fourth season at the helm of the Warrior basketball program with a dozen new players, all freshmen. Gone are all five starters and the top reserve from last year’s team, which finished just short of making the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges state playoffs.

Fresh off a state championship season, East Central Community College Women’s Basketball Coach Crandal Porter has a lot of holes to fill if the Lady Warriors want to repeat their magical run of last season.

The Lady Warriors won the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges State Championship last February with a 75-63 win over Itawamba, before falling in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 23 Tournament. Along the way, East Central won 19 straight games.

The East Central Community College Warriors took a two touchdown lead into the locker room at halftime, but could not hold on as the No. 4 nationally ranked Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers stormed back for a 21-14 win in a Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College state semifinal football game played Saturday, Nov. 5, in Bailey Stadium in Decatur.

With the win, Northwest advanced to the MACJC State Championship at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba on Saturday, Nov. 12.

The defending state champion East Central Community College Lady Warriors went on the road Thursday, Nov. 3, and came home with a season-opening 80-75 win over the Coahoma Lady Tigers in a game played in Clarksdale.

With 10 new players on the roster, East Central fell behind after one quarter of play, 21-18. However, a strong second quarter gave the Lady Warriors the 44-39 halftime lead.

Coahoma cut the lead to three with less than a minute to play before East Central pulled out the five-point win.

A pair of free throws by freshman point guard Jaylon Chiles with eight seconds to play gave the East Central Community College Warriors a 64-62 win over Coahoma Community College in the season opener played in Clarksdale Thursday, Nov. 3.

Chiles, a product of Biloxi High School, scored 11 points and dished out four assists in just 13 minutes of play.

East Central led by as many as 12 points in the first half before the Tigers closed the gap to 32-27 at intermission.

East Central Community College freshman running back Dwayne Barnett of Gulfport is the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges Football Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Southwest Mississippi Community College on Oct. 29.

East Central Community College’s Gospel Choir will present its fall campus concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016, in the Vickers Fine Arts Center Auditorium on the Decatur campus.

John Harris, chief of police at ECCC, will serve as the guest speaker.

Harris joined the East Central police force in 2012 and was promoted to chief of campus police in 2013. Prior to joining ECCC’s staff, he was chief of campus police for Meridian Community College.
